Amateur Porn Star Killer (2005)

gzj00KlIn the opening of “Amateur Porn Star Killer”, the character Brandon travels around the dark streets looking and searching. For what? Well, it’s not that difficult to figure out. Upon his searching, in the lower right hand corner, in a small window box, a young blonde girl silently undresses and parades herself around. By this simple scene of our killer driving through the murky streets, and this young woman, we’re able to fully comprehend the extent of this man’s lunacy. The flesh is something many men crave. And the flesh is something many men would admittedly kill for.

With “Amateur Porn Star Killer” we also learn that murder, exhibition, and sex can be a very sexual exercise for the mentally deranged. “Amateur Porn Star Killer” is a frightening horror film, a true horror film, not because it can happen, but because it has happened. Ryan’s direction is dizzying and often times too realistic. Anyone who walks in to this film blindly will surely assume this film was edited out of genuine footage, and for that effect, this film deserves an immense debt of credit. Michiko Jimenez gives a very good performance as a gorgeous young girl picked up off the street in the middle of the night by a suave and friendly young man holding a camcorder. He explains he’s making a film and charms her back to a hotel room.

Films like “Hard Candy” and “Irreversible” have prided themselves in exploring misogyny and sadism to the fullest extent, but if you haven’t seen this, then you’ve been inflicted with tunnel-vision. Ryan’s film relies on a sound structure of gradual build-up, mounting tension, and top-notch utterly convincing performances. Ryan’s film is an example of resources as the films entirety takes place in the hotel room. We’re never sure what “Brandon’s” intentions are towards the entire meeting with the young girl, but through the camera, we’re able to be given a vague glimpse at the inner workings of his sick mind. Not many films can make me feel a genuine sense of unease and discomfort, but “Amateur” basically succeeds in such an effort.

Ryan’s film is reliant on the talents of his cast, and they make the film stand out. “Amateur” is a gruesome and awfully disturbing account into sexual deviancy and the ability of people to take advantage of innocence and vulnerability. When the climax finally arrives after a brutal and torturous sequence of foreplay and sick mind games, Ryan pays off without exploiting the film too much, and Ryan never lets up on the audience, and when the film was finished, I was genuinely stunned. The only horror that can stick in to the audiences minds, is horror that can manifest itself in society. “Amateur Porn Star Killer” is the fictional account of a tragedy that can and has happened many times in our world. Ryan’s film is a frightening, and engrossing piece of filmmaking, and I loved it.
