SUPERNATURAL: SEASON THREE (DVD)

Season three for Supernatural is a real breakthrough for the series. This was a time where the writer’s strike was looming and the series standing was still in doubt. In spite of how much you or I Love this show, “Supernatural” is always on the bubble. But then you watch episodes like the one where Sam and Dean are followed by Ghost Hunter wannabes named so eloquently: “Ghost Facers!” probably the best episode of the series so far; and suddenly you realize the show’s inherent brilliance, constantly understated and underrated due to the incessant hogging up by shit like “Gossip Girl,” and “America’s Next top Model.” You watch “A Very Supernatural Christmas” and chug your Jack Daniel’s laced Egg Nog with a grin.

I love episodes like “Fresh Blood,” and hope for years to come that “Supernatural” stays with us beyond four seasons. It’s too damn good and much better than “Buffy.” Lillian Patterson just sent me a letter bomb for saying that. All kidding aside, “Supernatural” Season three is wonderful, it’s a point in the brothers Winchesters lives where Dean has given his soul up for his brother Sam in a moment of sadness, and in regret, lives with the devil on his back knowing the deadline for his soul is due soon.

Creator Eric Kripke explores life without Dean is genius episodes that take off from “Groundhog’s Day” entitled “Mystery Spot” where Sam does everything in his power to prevent Dean’s sudden death at the hands of a car jacker that ends up turning in to a million cruel, funny, and demented deaths of unusual variety as the days repeat themselves; he soon discovers there may be no hope in doing so learning a valuable lesson from a mysterious party. All and all, season three is filled with too many highlights to list in one sitting. Suffice it to say I remain a hardcore fan and sat through the entire set again. It’s a blast for anyone seeking a retreat from the stock monster hunters of pop culture.

As for the DVD, we’re given a “Closer Look” in to select episodes like “Jus in Bello” and “The Kids are Alright” with producers, writers, and series creator Eric Kripke. On Episode Thirteen, there’s a bonus confessional series with the Ghost Facers! That is hilarious and a superb add on if you saw the episode; and on Disc Five we receive a slew of new information like “From Legends to Reality: Supernatural Effects” the twenty three minute look at the making of Season Three’s special effects that is absolutely entertaining.

There’s even a great scene where the producers and the special effects artists are watching a potential episode and the producers are demanding more blood for the scene. Brilliance! There’s also a hilarious eight minute gag reel for season three with hilarious outtakes and gaffs from the cast including that sexy Lauren Cohan. Finally, there’s a five minute featurette about that sweet ass 67 Impala Dean drives in the series that’s become a character over time. Spoiler: It’s not just a car, its various cars! Gasp! We also learn about a prop car used for close up shots, and we get an interview with the props master who has all of the Winchester Boys weapons memorized. Did you know the Colt was especially made? It’s a great series of features for you “Supernatural” fans.

Great extras, a great show with a great third season and you get your money's worth. "Supernatural" is fantastic and even at its weakest, it's better than most crap on television. Buy it.
