Maybe I just had high expectations that couldn't have been met
because I basically expected a lot more from the director one of the
more twisted indie horror movies I've ever seen, "Mr. Video."
There's not much you can do with two minutes on your plate, but I
expected a lot more from this short format film. Maybe more ghosts,
maybe more extrapolation, and maybe some better characterization.
Regardless of how much was added,

"Log 159" felt like the final
moments of a feature length film cut from the actual print
and made to look like a short. Brief and oh so lacking in
subtlety, Alex Masterton's short revolves around a ghost
hunter named Tom Price who takes his investigation to a pub
in South London where the man gets more than he bargained
for with his investigation. It sounds like a lot to squeeze
in to two minute right? That's because it is. We never learn
anything about Price, we don't know if he's an actual ghost
hunter, hell we don't even know who found the footage left
by him when the movie was over. |

Why was the ghost
murderous? Was the ghost murderous? Was it all Price's imagination?
Maybe Masterton is using his short as a template for an upcoming
feature length version; whatever the case, "Log 159" is much too
vague and lacking in depth for me to enjoy it let alone recommend
it. In the end I knew I'd seen something but I didn't know what.
"Log 159" falters before it ever actually gets to the big score.
"Log 159" feels more
like a clip to a larger picture than it does a short film. The entire
film is based on a climax that's rushed, too clunky and much to brief to
really enjoy. I hope Masterton has plans for this one as a bigger
feature, because this short does nothing for me.
