A Monsterous Holiday (2013)

I don’t want to say “A Monsterous Holiday” feels like a throwaway episode of “Jimmy Neutron,” but our main character is a scientist wunderkind with goofy brown hair and a robot dog. You do the math. “A Monsterous Holiday” is less a monster comedy and more a friendship tale about a scientist who wants to create life, and a monster that learns how to live.

Andy is a scientist whose dad is motivated by sports and only sports, and wants him to play football like his older brother. When Andy ventures out to the castle of Dr. Frankenstein, he discovers the monster who lives there. After an agreement, a la “The Prince and the Pauper,” they agree to switch places. Andy will work on his science experiment with Frankenstein’s equipment, while Frankenstein decides to begin playing football to convince Andy’s father he’s competing.

Meanwhile, Frankenstein begins building a fan base with his great football playing while Andy’s own monster begins wreaking havoc. All in all “A Monsterous Holiday” is a mediocre animated film with a pretty great voice cast. I was never sure why anyone else ever went to Dr. Frankenstein’s castle, or why football was so important to Andy’s dad all the way through. In either case, “A Monsterous Holiday” is a decent diversion, and one that’s worth it if only for the decent voice cast.
